Authorization for Continued Treatment

Managed care plans typically approve a set number of treatment sessions for a specific time period. This may be five sessions within the next two months, or ten sessions this year, or even one session within the next week. After using these sessions, your psychologist provider must request additional sessions from the managed care company, to receive authorization for continued treatment. To receive this authorization, the psychologist must complete a treatment summary, provide a diagnosis and prognosis, and estimate the total number of sessions needed for treatment. This information goes to the managed  care insurance company, and then they decide whether to authorize additional treatment sessions.  If they do not provide authorization, then payment for your treatment will stop.
